People who love the ocean are called thalassophiles. Isn't it nice to have just the right word for things? Wearing ocean jewelry is a great way to bring a piece of the ocean with you, wherever you go. We have an extensive collection of ocean jewelry, including whales, manta rays, turtles, and octopus. Some of our most popular pieces are from the ocean jewelry collection, and we continue to find inspiration from the ocean for new designs.

2018 Ocean Jewelry Designs

Fossilized walrus and ancient mammoth ivories are unique materials that are particularly meaningful for our nature inspired designs, including the ocean jewelry designs. In 2018 we released six new ocean jewelry designs featuring sea turtles, whale tails, and an octopus.

Hand Carved Octopus Pendant with Rainbow Moonstones

[caption id="attachment_323" align="alignleft" width="300"]"Beneath The Waves" Octopus pendant from the ocean jewelry collection "Beneath The Waves" from the ocean jewelry collection[/caption] The ocean depths hold countless creatures, perhaps none more fascinating than the octopus. They continue to amaze us with their intelligence and have become known for their mysterious and captivating deep sea way of life. In this pendant, the octopus seems to be playing in the waves, surrounded by faceted rainbow moonstone gems catching the light of the ocean. The octopus is hand carved from ancient walrus tusk ivory. The walrus tusk has lain in the ground for 300-5,000 years, accreting colors from minerals in the soil. It takes on a range of tones, ranging from creamy white to earthy browns. The coloring and texture within the ivory is aptly suited to the beautiful and varied appearance of the octopus. The native Yupik of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, have the exclusive right to gather the fossilized walrus ivory we use in our designs. This precious ancient material is an important part of the Yupik's economy and heritage, and it is the inspiration behind many of our most beloved jewelry pieces.

Fossilized Walrus Sea Turtle Pendant

[caption id="attachment_324" align="alignleft" width="300"]"Turtle Hatchling" Sea Turtle pendant from the ocean jewelry collection "Turtle Hatchling" Sea Turtle pendant from the ocean jewelry collection[/caption] Sea turtles start their life with a courageous journey to the water. Female sea turtles lay their eggs in a hole dug into the sand and then bury the eggs and return to the water, leaving the eggs unattended. The baby turtles hatch together over a short period of time and dash over the sand to the water. They have no choice but to bravely set out into the unknown. Sea turtles have come to symbolize good health and long life; their relaxed nature and peaceful determination make it easy to see why they are admired around the globe. For this pendant, the turtle's shell is hand carved from fossilized walrus ivory and set in sterling silver. This charming turtle is also available as earrings and makes a beautiful set.

Ancient Mammoth Ivory Whale Tail Earrings & Pendant

[caption id="attachment_325" align="alignleft" width="300"]"Whale Song" Earrings and Pendant from our ocean jewelry collection "Whale Song" Earrings and Pendant from our ocean jewelry collection[/caption] This carved ivory earrings and pendant set depicts a whale tail in soft, creamy tones splashing out of an ocean of sterling silver waves, with a glistening blue topaz stone above. The whale tail is carved from fossilized mammoth ivory, which is an ancient material that has spent thousands of years in the earth. After it is uncovered and gathered, this prized ancient ivory is hand carved into one of a kind heirloom jewelry. Fossilized mammoth ivory is especially beautiful when paired with gleaming sterling silver and semi-precious stones. The effect is both multi-dimensional and uniquely narrative - it tells a story about the natural world and evokes a mood. Zealandia designs are definitive in their connection to nature in her many expressions. Our jewelry is often collected by those who feel this same deep kinship with the natural world.

Sea Turtle Pendant With Blue Topaz & Rainbow Moonstone

[caption id="attachment_326" align="alignleft" width="300"]"Wave Rider" Sea turtle pendant from our ocean jewelry collection "Wave Rider" Sea turtle pendant with blue topaz[/caption] Whether the waves call to you to surf them or watch them, this Wave Rider pendant speaks volumes for those who are called to the sea. The sparkling blue topaz, swimming sea turtle, and glistening moonstone create a seascape that can be carried with you wherever you go. (Please remember to never swim with your fossilized ivory jewelry! It should not get repeatedly wet or soaked, as that will irrevocably damage the fossilized ivory.) Many thalassophiles enjoy collecting our ocean jewelry and each piece has a unique meaning for its owner. We hope you enjoy browsing our ocean jewelry collection and find a piece that calls to you with special memories of the ocean.
