In this rendition of our storied mermaid, she finds herself perched atop a spiral ammonite fossil, cradling a conch shell.
Mammoth Ivory Tusk Ocean Earrings in Handmade Silver - Ocean Currents
Our luscious hand-carved mermaid is perched atop a fossilized Moroccan ammonite. In her hands she tenderly holds a conch shell, creating a scene straight out of childhood imagining of mermaid life. Each Moroccan ammonite fossil has unique patterns and coloring. The vibrant swirl of colors creates a sense of movement and allows us access to the buried past. Little is known about ammonites other than they were sea creatures that thrived during the early Jurassic period and became extinct at about the same time as dinosaurs.
The fossilized ivory used for this pendant is fossilized mammoth ivory that is tens of thousands of years old. It lay buried in the permafrost until it became exposed from erosion. Since mammoths went extinct thousands of years ago, fossilized mammoth ivory is a finite material and prized for its soft cream color that makes it ideal for fine jewelry.
