Moroccan Ammonite Fossil Pin/Pendant

This fossil pin/pendant is made from a Moroccan ammonite, a sea creature that became extinct at about the same time as the dinosaurs. Ammonites and all their close relatives are extinct. Little is known about them except that they thrived in the early Jurassic period (around 200 million years ago).

Ammonite fossils vary in size but always display the Fibonacci type spiral pattern that makes them so attractive. Here, the fossil is polished and enhanced with a continuing outer spiral of fossilized walrus tusk ivory. This ivory is young by ammonite standards, though it is still some 500 to 3,000 years old. The fossilized ivory earned its natural earth tones after being buried for most of its life. Minerals color the walrus tusk a range of caramel to rich cocoa hues.

Each segment of fossilized walrus ivory is hand carved and inked with designs adapted from ancient rock art script. These symbols are as evocative as they are mysterious, adding another layer to a fossil pin that is truly inspired by bygone eras. Each ammonite is different, as it is an actual fossil with unique patterning.
