Southwest Jewelry – Garnet and Silver Skull Pendant
This bold garnet and silver skull pendant was inspired by imagery from the desert southwest, the art of Georgia O’Keefe, and the beautiful transience that we know as life on this earth. The pendant is a study in symmetry, line, and symbolism. The skull’s horns offer the piece balance and structure while the natural lines of the skull itself soften the piece, lending it that touch of realism. As in Native traditions, the feather is added to symbolize communion with spirit.
Garnet comes to us in a variety of colors. We chose deep red garnet for this southwest skull necklace. Its vivid color plays beautifully off the ancient ivory’s creamy look, and its properties of protection and earthy strength complement the skull’s talismanic feel. Garnet is also revered as the stone of love, passion, and vitality.
The ancient ivory in this sterling silver skull pendant is from mammoth tusk. Remnants of the mammoths’ tusks have lain in the earth or permafrost for over 15,000 years. They are unearthed in a variety of soft cream colors, and take us back to a time when these great beasts still roamed the earth. Mammoth ivory is beloved for its age-old story and for the quality it lends to fine designs and art works.
