Silver Hummingbird Jewelry—Fossilized Walrus Ivory Hummingbird Pendant Necklace

A beloved sight in the garden and in the wild, hummingbirds inspire us with their love of life, agility, and with their seemingly endless energy. They are mesmerizing in the air and their flights speeds can reach upward of 50 miles per hour. In fact, they have evolved specifically for flying. Their feet are only functional as perching tools—the hummingbird cannot walk or hop and is truly a creature of the air.

Set your camera to a fast shutter speed and you can capture the hummingbird as we have done here, in mid beat of its tiny wings. We've incorporated three sterling silver dangles that meet the pendant in moveable articulating joints to suggest the speed of this remarkable creature. Sterling silver wings, tail, and beak create a pleasing cool effect against the fossilized ivory's warm creaminess. This is the kind of hummingbird pendant necklace you'll get compliments on every time you wear it!

We've carved the hummingbird's lithe body from fossilized walrus tusk ivory, a prized natural material that is between 500 and 3,000 years old. This fossilized ivory has spent much of its long life buried underground where minerals stain it rich cream to honey and deep cocoa hues. Native Alaskans gather it for use in their arts and crafts or for sale and trade. Fossilized walrus ivory is valued as a unique accent to handmade jewelry such as this carved ivory pendant. At Zealandia, our use of fossilized ivory honors our love for the earth, its inhabitants living and gone, and the bounty of nature.
