This horse pin and pendant takes its design from ancient cave art, beautifully encapsulating the timeless spirit and beauty of the horse in rich materials.
Our horse pin and pendant was created to pay homage to the ancient cave paintings that famously depict horses in various states of ecstatic movement. The horse has come to symbolize the drive that carries us all through our lives, as well as the fine line between our instinctual and tamed sides. For many, the horse is also a potent symbol of passion in life, and undeniable strength.
The center of this horse pin and pendant is hand carved in fossilized walrus ivory, which is some 500 to 3,000 years old. This gorgeous material has lain buried in the earth for centuries where it takes on a range of colors from cream to cocoa based on the surrounding mineral composition. The native Yupik of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, gather all our fossilized walrus ivory for sale, trade, and carving. It is an important part of their economy, and only they are permitted to collect it on this select location.
