The three sea turtles are carved from fossilized walrus ivory, a prized material that some 500 to 3,000 years old. This ancient ivory has lain in the earth for centuries where minerals color it the rich caramel to cocoa hues that signify fossilized walrus ivory. Native peoples gather it for sale and trade, and it is valued the world over for the unique ancient earthen quality it lends to artisan crafts and art works.
